The Less Than Magnificent Seven
After defeating the pirates and regaining their ship, the adventurers returned to pick up
Katherine before returning to the mainland. Once in Betaya, they resupplied and learned
things had grown steadily worse during the time we'd been away. It was decided that the
mirror should be left with Snow's people in Betaya instead of carrying it across the
countryside. The next step was to check in at Beeblebrox's castle before heading to
Mangar's Woods.
When they got there, the castle was a mess. Beeblebrox was nowhere to be found. Vain
appeared. He would not speak but now follows Brecaryn. While searching the castle, the
party met up with Lashtal who had come to speak with Beeblebrox, as well. She did not know
what had happened. Everyone travelled back to North Luka together before going their
separate ways. Lashtal was able to spare 4 horses for the party.
Unfortunately, due to Alana's less than familiar association with tact, the party had to
leave Yokel before it was fully dawn. The group was attacked by an ooze monster that
consumed one of the horses. Luckily, the sun came out and dried up the ooze before more was
lost. They travelled hard, trying to make it to the next town before nightfall. On the
way, the party was attacked by nightmare birds that birthed stirges from their wings. After
taking quite a beating, they pressed on until they reached the town of Bryn Sturgis. The
people had such a look of desperation that they could not ignore their plea for help. Orcs
had come demanding their crops and were scheduled to return the next day to collect. The
party agreed to stay and protect the village. While Malouf went to the orc caves to
determine their numbers, the rest of the party prepared for the coming battle. A few
surprises were prepared for the invaders. Malouf returned with info from his reconnaissance
mission. The party would be facing worgs and ogres in addtion to orcs. Everyone settled in
to wait.
Ignoring the group's initial offer to withdraw and never bother the villagers again, battle
ensued. Brecaryn and Alana positioned themselves on top of a watchtower in order to pick
off orcs with spells and arrows. Malouf, Snow, and Lieralyn stood on the bridge to meet the
main attack while Josy stayed close at hand to provide any necessary healing. Vain did nothing. Unexpectedly,
instead of allowing the villagers to act as cannon fodder, Flerm took up a position guarding
them.
In the end, Lieralyn was critically injured, Snow lost consciousness, and Malouf was killed
before the battle was finished. Luckily, the adventurers won the battle and Josy had a
scroll to resurrect the dead. Lieralyn's injury could not be tended by any in the party or
the village. They would have to wait until they could find a priest in another town.
As a reward for helping them, the poor villagers gave the party a strange sword that had a tightly wound spring instead of a blade. They said it was given to them as a gift by travelling gnomes and they didn't know what to do with it:
