First, obviously, everything here is based on Marvel comics and the characters and images are copyrights or trademarks of Marvel, and are used without permission. I believe everything here is covered under fair use, as this is intended as a scholarly project (as much as anything about super-hero comics can be). But i would be willing to modify this site if Marvel thought otherwise.
Beyond that, here are a number of websites that I use while working on this project.
- Most importantly, the Marvel Chronology Project, often abbreviated on this site as MCP. I explain in my Q&A section how my project is different than theirs, but i still rely heavily on the work that they have already done, and i probably couldn't do this without what they've done (and are doing).
- A subset of the MCP is the Marvel Chronology Project search. This was originally a separate site created by Jimmy Petersson but it's now been merged with the MCP.
- Then there's the Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe, which lists minor characters that are often too insignificant for the MCP to notice. I use it to check and make sure i'm listing these characters correctly.
- CBR's When We First Met series was very helpful in making sure i spotlight a lot of minor "firsts".
- Sean Howe's book Marvel Comics: The Untold Story has tons of great behind-the-scenes info that i've worked into my entries where appropriate.
- Not directly related to the chronology aspect, but the Unofficial Handbook of Marvel Comics Creators (UHBMCC) is actually my primary source for title and credit information. You'd think i'd look at the title pages of the comics first, but when i'm creating a batch of entries at once it's easier to look at the UHBMCC's listings than flip through the books, since the title page isn't always in the front and especially since the credits in the books aren't always accurate. The UHBMCC is also a great resource for finding reprint info.
- I steal all my cover images from The Grand Comics Database and it's also a good site for confirming credit and reprint info when i need to double-check the info i got from UHBMCC.
- A thanks to all the fine upstanding citizens who make all the Marvel torrents available. Having all my comics digitally makes the screenshot process so much easier (and it explains why i'll sometimes say i only have an issue in black & white and yet my screenshots are in color). For what it's worth, i only review comics i own physical copies of, because i'm not really ready to make the jump to reading comics on a digital screen.
Also, the writers of the Marvel Indexes and Marvel Sagas, especially George Olshevsky and Peter Sanderson, are kind of the pioneers of this type of work. Oddly, i've never been too interested in those series myself (because the Indexes only focus on a small subset of the Universe and the Sagas are just too dry) but i know that the MCP has based a lot of their work on these guys. And i do check them when i'm stumped.
On a more personal note, i'd also like to thank my lovely and talented partner "min", who not only tolerates but also encourages and helps with my obsession here.
And lastly but not leastly, thanks to the readers and commenters who let me know when i'm wrong, add additional information, or just make it clear that other people are interested in this stuff so i'm not doing this in a vacuum. So do leave a comment, if only to say hi.
