Fighting Mind Flayers without a helmet is a no-brainer:
Flerm: Brecaryn! BRECARYN!

Brecaryn: I'm in my lab.

Flerm: BRECARYN!

Brecaryn: I'M IN MY...

Flerm: Oh there you are.

Brecaryn: What do you want, Flerm?

Flerm: Why didn't you answer me when i called? Are you hiding in here? Ugh, what is that smell? What are you doing in here?

Brecaryn: What. Do. You. Want?!

Flerm: Sheesh. Why are you always so angry? Anyway, i heard you talking to Josy after the thing with the Mind Flayers. When they switched minds with us? And Josy said that her De-Spell Magic spell didn't work?

Brecaryn: Dispel Magic.

Flerm: Uh-huh. And you said that the Mind Flayers' powers are sonic and not magic and that's why there was nothing to De-Spell?

Brecaryn: Psionic. Dispel.

Flerm: Why are you just repeating what i'm saying?

Brecaryn: What is your question, Flerm?

Flerm: Well, i have this helmet, see? And it's supposed to protect me from mental attacks. And it worked against the Kopru. And i've heard you say that the Kopru are just primitive Mind Flayers?

Brecaryn: Yes?

Flerm: So why didn't it work against the Mind Flayers?

Brecaryn: Flerm, that's... actually a really good question.

Flerm: I know.

Brecaryn: Give me the helmet.

Flerm: What? No! It's mine.

Brecaryn: To look at!

Flerm: Oh. Ok. Here. But you'd better give it back.

Brecaryn: Shh. Ok, let me see. Rub on a little oil of gutter fish. A little crushed Grell brain...

Flerm: Hey, that's disgusting! Don't put that on my helmet!

Brecaryn: Shh. Ok, i see what happened. Look at this.

Flerm: Yeah, you made my helmet gross. Thanks.

Brecaryn: No, you see? That pattern of psychic residue. Your helmet did work!

Flerm: No it didn't! My mind got put into a Mind Flayer body, remember? And Alana wound up in my head? Or part of her, or something.

Brecaryn: Right, exactly. But do you think that's what the Mind Flayers wanted to happen? Why would they want us controlling their bodies? They must have been trying to do something else, maybe take control of us, and instead your helmet caused a backlash and mixed up all our minds.

Flerm: Ahhhh! So i actually saved the day! Without me, we would have all become Mind Flayer slaves!

Brecaryn: That's about the most self-serving way of putting it, but your helmet did foil the Mind Flayers and prevent us from being completely taken over by them. It wasn't exactly a complete victory. Theodore Dobbins did die in that fight.

Flerm: Who? Is that one of the new minions? I can't keep track of them. And Josy brought him back, so what's the problem? If it wasn't for my helmet, we'd all be dead. Or slaves. Or dead slaves.

Brecaryn: *Sigh* Yes, Flerm. If it wasn't for your helmet, we might have all been mind controlled by the Mind Flayers.

Flerm: I knew it! I knew i was awesome in some way. I just wasn't sure how. Give me my helmet back. [Puts it on; leaves]

Brecaryn: [to herself] He won't think he's so awesome when he takes off that helmet and finds his hair full of Grell brains.

oooh! Flerm's got a stink head! *giggle*

Hah hah hah! Funny story! I enjoyed it! Do more!

Meh, sounds about right. I did save the day!

Where did Flerm get the helmet from or who gave it to him/her? Can other helmets be made so that everyone in the party can be protected against mind attacks?

I'm getting into this D&D thing so bear with me if I ask inane questions. :)

Flerm found that helmet exploring the ruins of a temple where creatures with mind-controlling powers called Kopru lived. Someone had previously gone into that temple hoping the helmet would protect them from the Kopru, and obviously it didn't quite work out that way since Flerm found their corpse.

Magic items are generally created by powerful (non-player) wizards or other such entities and then conveniently get lost from time to time so that players can find them. Or players get them by defeating enemies that have them. Or they can find component stuff that can be made into something magical (e.g., the scales of a dragon can be brought to a skilled Dwarven blacksmith and turned into a suit of armor). But they just can't be replicated unless you learn what something is made of and/or the spells/rituals/etc. that were used to create it in the first place.

Cheers for that. I've found your D&D homepage, which is quite informative for newbies. I'll refer to it from now on if I have any generic questions.

If you seek knowledge from Flerm he does not have much. In fact it is a miracle he remembers anything. He is just an awesome fighter equipped with many magical items. He covets all powerful magical items above all else. Ask him about his array of swords. They are awesome!

That Brecaryn is not so nice a wizard. Or is she a cleric. Eh who knows. No one really likes her.

Flerm's been hit too many times in the head. I wouldn't listen to much he says. You're probably better off just ignoring him. or you could just try telling him things are magical that aren't. I always get a kick out of that.

I'm not sure who to believe. I'm cautious of Wizards or anyone with too much power. I'd ask about the swords but I feel Flerm would take up the whole page showing off :)
