Recap 19 Supplemental: Troll Tartare, Anyone?

August 23, 2008

We'll Prolly Get Killed, But Oh Well

Retameron assigned one of his knights to accompany the group to the Waste - Sir William. There was still the problem of reaching the Waste before nightfall. Malekith stepped in and offered aid once again. He sent one of his steam-powered carts and a gnome driver to take the party where they needed to go.

Once in the swamps of the Waste, the cart became mired in the muck. Leaving the gnome to free it, the party moved on, searching for the mind flayers. They found them in an old ruin, performing a ritual. Most likely the ritual they used to summon the Red Bull.

Using the invisibility powder found in the mind flayer dungeon, the group was able to sneak up on the mind flayers and initiate the attack. Unfortunately, this was all the advantage they could expect because the mind flayers had the ability to detect their presence without sight. They retaliated by throwing up a forcefield that pushed all the party members out except Flerm. His helm protected him from any mental tricks the mind flayers used.

Unable to reach them with their bodies, each member of the party discovered their weapons could still pass through the barrier. Arrows and ranged weapons were used to bring down the mind flayers within. Flerm continued to attack them directly from inside the field. Unfortunately, Malouf and Lieralyn were both injured mentally by the mind flayer attacks. They both had the intellect of a small child and were unable to aid or defend themselves. Under normal circumstances, the rest of the party would have tried to protect them, but because everyone was invisible, their plight remained unknown.

Before the mind flayers could be defeated, a new problem arrived. The Red Bull.

Who Is The Red Bull?

It was time to use what they had gained from the Essence of Frost and hope it was enough. Sir William bravely tried to attack the Red Bull, but without the Essence, his attacks did no damage. When the Bull charged at Josy, a wall of ice formed to protect her, and luckily, Malouf who was standing directly behind her. Seeing this and guessing at what happened, Snow shouted to her team to group up. Those who chose 'attack' should stick close to those who chose 'defense'.

Hoping to take out the mind flayers before having to deal with the Bull, Snow and Flerm finished them off and the forcefield disappeared. But nothing is ever easy. The corpses sunk into the muck and in their place, giant tentacles emerged and began to attack the group. Even though they were still invisible, the tentacles had no trouble finding them and grabbing them to pull into the mud.

Sir William continued to attempt distracting the bull while Alana fired arrows at it. Flerm, Snow, and Brecaryn attacked the tentacles. Flerm got knocked out and was being pulled into the mud by the tentacles, drowning. Thankfully, the elves' ability to see infrared let Brecaryn know Flerm was in trouble and she informed Snow. Snow attacked the tentacle holding the dark elf and was able to free him. Eventually, all of the tentacles were killed. And the invisibility wore off.

At this point, his constant harrying had enraged the Bull so much, it started chasing Sir William. Knowing the knight did not stand a chance against the Bull, Snow quickly made sure Flerm was safe before rushing off to attack the Bull. Ice forming around her, she landed a devastating kick and destroyed the Bull. Only, it was not yet over.

The form it had been forced take on this plane was shattered, but the elemental itself was still very much alive and very angry. It attempted to speak to the group, but none could understand. Its fires grew as it became angrier and laughed at the feeble attempts made to stop it. Soon, the entire swamp would be consumed in fire.

Elaborating on the knowledge that the Essence had shielded those who took "defense", Snow urged the group to stand behind Josy and Brecaryn and advance on the elemental. Flerm and Josy were together while Brecaryn, Snow, and Alana formed the second front. Alana, seeing Lieralyn standing there unmoving, pulled her along. Malouf was left to stand to the side because he had refused to bathe in the Essence.

The continuing advance of the group diminished the elemental and eventually caused it to cease existing. The swamp was safe. The land was safe. Josy's healing helped to restore Malouf and Lieralyn to themselves.

Whoo! Unicorn Baby!

As the group was taking an accounting of injuries, a familiar and unexpected figure materialized - Leeto. And with him, a baby unicorn. Leeto was entrusting his former companions with the unicorn, born on the Isle of Dread. They were to take it to the pixies in Malta Wood. They were also to fulfill the promise Leento had made to the pixies and help them with the trolls. The woods used to be inhabited by Yerraterra who had experimented with creating an army of super trolls. It was possible these were the trolls maligning the pixies. After giving the group this task, Leento left, returning to the Isle.

There would be no time to stop in Roesh to rest and resupply. The unicorn had to be taken to the pixies without delay. Although the Red Bull had been defeated, until the unicorn came into its power, the land was still not safe. Returning to the gnome, they managed to free the steam-powered cart and convinced the gnome to drive them Malta Woods. Thus fulfilling his job, he left the group to find the nearest tavern.

The pixies found the group right away and took the unicorn. They described as best they could the trolls attacking them. They seemed to be based in Yerraterra's old fort. The next morning, the group departed for the fort. On the way, they encountered a group of trolls. These were not normal trolls. One looked like it had been cross-bred with some sort of canine. Another had 2 heads. Perhaps Yerraterra was not dead, afterall.

The group dispatched these trolls and pressed on. They knew it would be a hard fight. They were not well supplied with oil or acid, the surest way to keep a troll from regenerating. And these new trolls could regenerate faster than normal.

Itty Bitty Tiny Bits

At the fort, they fought more trolls. In lieu of oil or acid, Lieralyn hacked the trolls to bits with her anti-regeneration sword. It wasn't pleasant or quick, but it got the job done. Once inside, and with the help of Lashtal's map from the earlier battle with Yerra Terra, the group navigated through the underground fort. Much of it was the same, but some things had changed. In one area, a warning was posted near the entrance. Beyond that was a pool of water and a cave. Inside the cave was a strange skeleton, a spherical ribcage.

In another direction, drugged and chained trolls were held in a hut while enthralled pixies filled syringes with their blood, emptying it into a barrel. In disgust, the group killed the trolls (more hacking to bits), ending their misery, and destroyed the barrel of blood.

Fighting many more trolls as they continued on (hack hack hack, fireball, fireball). In one battle, a young troll, knowing it was outnumbered, fled from the battle. Snow refused to kill any living creature in cold blood and ordered the group to leave it be, leaving the room to continue with their mission. Although, Malouf did not agree with this, he accepted Snow's decision. Alana, Lieralyn, and Flerm felt differently and executed the cringing troll without hesitation. This action signalled a change in the group's dynamic.

After defeating even more trolls (hackety hack hack), they found a group of captured pixies. Freeing them, the group informed them of the enthralled pixies and told them to use caution while leaving the caves. Following Lashtal's map, the party investigated the area marked as the treasure room. Those most interested in treasure investigated the room immediately - 3 magic scrolls and a potion of clairvoyance went to Brecaryn. Alana found a pair of gloves and immediately put them on. She belatedly thought to ask Brecaryn to cast Identify on the gloves to discover if they had magickal properties - Gloves of Clumsiness - and they would not come off. The best that could be hoped for was that the resulting clumsiness wouldn't injure others in the party as well.

Next, more trolls (hack, hack, fireball, hack).
